Ok, I figured as much, but using the l10n_mode 'exclude' in the TCA array (for those fields you don't want to display in a different language in 
the BE) and setting sys_language_softMergeIfNotBlank for the FE you could achieve the same effect *and* remain compliant with the basic T3 
localization features.
