You can limit the usable categories from the (enhanced) 
mbi_products_categories by making use of the pid. I hope this works.
For the backend:
You must set useStoragePid in the EM.
Then you can select the 'General record storage page' from the uppermost 
page to limit the shown categories to only those pages.
