[Typo3-shop] problems with sorting in pages with recursive lists

I have a store where products are sorted by the item number. This works 
fine on individual pages which contain a set of products. This store has 
"super categories" that display all the products on the subpages. They 
show up fine there but in no apparent order.

To clarify with a real example I have these pages

All Products
   Petite
   Small
   Medium
   Large

The product numbers on the 4 subpages are in this order

Petite
A10100-SD
A10100-SL
A2000-SD
A2000-SL
A6173-MS
A6173-PS
A6252-S
A6254-MS
A6254-PS
A6298-S
A6386-S
A6396-MS


Small
A10101-S
A2005-SD
A2005-SL
A2550-S

A6227-PSD

But when you hit the all products page the first ones are in this order. 
   This happens with the orderByItemNumberSg TS setting or any 
permutations of orderBy.
