If you want to keep backward compatibility, you need a testing system
with a working example shop system, which makes use of all features.
Every code in the future will have to be tested if it still works with
this original shop system.
I see no other way to assure that it would be backwards compatible.
There is hardly a developer who knows and understands all the
possibilities with the current Typo3 shop system.
