Well - we did something similar for www.flyerking.de
But it's not done automatically.
The user can save the current status of the basket and recall it later on
via "My Flyerking" where he finds a list with his full order history and all
the saved baskets.
This list can be sorted via different selectboxes for sorting fields,
maximum number of hits, cue and rewind buttons.
When a basket is saved and not finished he can klick to delete, change or
copy this basket. If it's already finished he can only copy it. The basket
only gets an order number when finished.

In case of Flyerking most clients have nearly identical orders recurring
every month. So they highly appreciate the possibility to copy finished
orders.
Another thing that happens very often is that the client already knows he
needs a number of flyers but the designer hasn't finished the files so the
client can not fill in the required fields with a description of the design.
In this case he can fill in all other stuff he knows, save the order and
recall it later to fill it with the missing information.

The point is: A shop system that offers the user these comfort features will
make sure that the user will happily come back to order again, again and
again. So it's not just usability - it's about the profit the client can
make when using tt-shop instead of another system without these features.

Another feature:

Variable delivery adresses, variable contact persons _and_ variable billing
adresses selectable with a selectbox from previously saved lists.
The client can fill in as many adresses as he likes in the "My Flyerking"
section.
Any adress he adds to the form fields that isn't already saved in these
lists will automatically be added when finishing the order so that it is
avialable next time.

If you ask me: Both of them are not just "nice to have" but a "must have".
