[TYPO3-ttnews] tx_news: catmenu and datemenu as select boxes

At the moment the filter menus are simple link lists. When the number of 
elements is growing, they tend to be confusing (not clearly arranged, 
unübersichtlich).
Is there a chance to modify them to select boxes?

Is it complicated to do so? Is expertise in Fluid necessary? Or is it 
extension programming?

It would be nice to hear your thoughts concerning this issue.
