[TYPO3-ttnews] Upgrade 1.3.0 to 1.4.1 and 2.2.24 - news list is blank

Debian Linux 2.4.27-2-386, php v4.2rc2, apache 2.0.52

I recently upgraded typo3 3.6.0 to 3.8.1.
The tt_news upgrade went along with it from 1.3.0 to 2.2.24 (global).
I have about 100 news items, no categories, no tt_news add-ons.

Problem:
A news LIST no longer shows any news - basically it shows just the header.
I created a brand new news listing content item, set the starting point 
and it shows nothing but the header.
I replaced my custom news template file with the 
tt_news_v2_template.html that came with 2.2.24 -- still blank.

To diagnose I re-installed the typo3 3.6.0/tt_news 1.3.0/SQLdb and tried 
upgrade JUST tt_news to 1.4.1 -- same problem.  I downgraded back to 
1.3.0 and the news listing came back.

What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?
