[TYPO3-ttnews] category as shortcut or selector

Hi

I am trying to work out the difference between these two choices...

1. Act as link to category shortcut - Category images/texts will be
displayed and function as a link to the page given as category shortcut.

2. Act as category selector - Category images/texts will be displayed and
function as category selector. -> useful for filtering search results

Is it that the first one is simply a navigation link, and then I have to
configure the page to select the category? So that I might have different
physical html pages to hold different categories?

And then the second one I could set up so that all categories pointed to the
same physical html page, but automatically selected the news to appear on
that page according to which category was selected?
