My assumption (and I really don't know because I'm not part of the
development team) when I saw the unlink icon was that it communicated: "this
element will be unlinked from the page (pid) but it still exists in the
system, and therefore it has not been deleted."
In my mind (again, I'm just a user, not part of the development team) I had
an immediate mental link with the recycler bin where I can recover, or
ultimately delete, the unlinked content element.
Just my impression.
