I meant the xml of the DS. If you use no valid XML in the DS, you'll run 
into problems at parsing.
I don't know, why it worked correct before, but maybe there was a 
problem at export/import with the characters.
I have this problem always if I export data and import it into another 
databse. All my äöü... get scrambled.
I guess you have the same problem with your DS.
Has to be something with UTF-8 and ISO-xyz.

The RTE has nothing to do with this. If you see HTML-Code in the 
Frontend, look into your DS if there is something like <HSC>1</HSC> at 
the specific fieldset.
