you should if you have installed with the install.sh have one core named 
core_en that should be addressed /solr/core_en/

BTW restarting the Solr Server created the cores defined in solr.xnl.

What is your distribution? Any other hints from the reports module.

Did you try to use hosted-solr.com for a test too?
