This works fine indeed. Have used it multiple times for example where 
the search in an intranet must include results from the external website 
too. In another installation to include the results from a non-TYPO3 
site which was indexed by Nutch (using the dkd modifications and their 
Nutch plugin).

I'm not completely sure if it works between different TYPO3 
installations because the sitehash uses the TYPO3 encryptionKey setting. 
I haven't tested this, so it's just from reading the code...
