[TYPO3-Solr] Nothing gets committed - where to start debugging

Number of fields in index: 0

> can TYPO3 connect to the solr server?

I have no indication that it can't - modules are working fine, and 
search form returns "Nothing found for "keyword"" message and no other 
error...
