I encountered that some while ago when migrating from Leopard to Snow
Leopard. It took me hours of work and recompilation to get it again Best
is indeed to remove all and reinstall from scratch (this lets you make
some cleanup at the same time :D)

Fortunately it did not happen again from Snow Leopard to Lion and
MacPorts upgraded itself a few weeks ago without any hassle.
