[TYPO3-dam] The new DAM only with PHP5?

Hello,

does the new DAM work only with PHP5?
On my debian with:
Apache 1.3
PHP4
TYPO3 4beta
and the developersnapshot dam_src-20051228-01
I receive this error message when clicking on the menu media>file:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: stripos() in 
/web/t34beta/htdocs/typo3conf/ext/dam/lib/class.tx_dam_actionbase.php
on line 405
(all chmod- and owner/group-settings are correct)

http://www.php.net/stripos says, stripos() is a PHP5-function
