HI,

you might want to try the EXT modern_skin  
(http://typo3.org/extensions/repository/view/modern_skin/current/)

It recrafts the Startpage in a way that is simular to Joomla.
I also like the bigger Buttons which make it easier to click them on a  
large screen (22") without having to use the zoom function of my browser.

Additionally, there should be more use of modern Ajax technology. Have  
look at Wordpress how this is done.

Im not a PHP coder, but I would be glad to help (maybe updating docs,  
howtos, wiki, ect.)
