[TYPO3-linux] can't select database in install tool

Hi again
I have found out a bit more but I'm still stuck.
Apparently I can't upgrade from 6.1 to 7.6 (need to upgrade to 6.2 first). So I will just concentrate on 6.1 to 6.2.
It is a while since I have done an upgrade. I am used to mostly installing the new source files, changing the symlink for typo3_src then running the install tool to make necessary upgrades (apart from any other steps needed from time to time).
I didn't realise at first, but when I run the install tool I am being treated like a fresh install and only being offered the 123 wizard for fresh installations. So I hadn't spotted that I was being asked to select an *empty* database.
Is there any way to force the install tool to run in the normal mode instead of 123? And to use the existing database.
Another issue is that the first phase of the 123 process told me that "/typo3_src should be a link, but it does not exist". But I had double checked and all seemed to be normal with the symlink functioning as it always has (though this time pointing to the new source folder). Have tried changing my folder structure but nothing seemed to work.
Any clues?
At the moment I'm stuck with two dead websites (for non-profit organisations).

Subject: [TYPO3-linux] can't select database in install tool
Hi all
I have been using Typo3 since about 2002, so I have done a number of installs and upgrades, although I'm still using older versions of Typo3. The hosting provider recently upgraded to PHP 5.6, so I needed to upgrade from Typo3 6.1. (Yes, I know that I am way behind the times. I have another site still on 4.5, which I'll have to look at next. )
I first tried upgrading from 6.1 to 7.6.
I have a problem with the install tool. It allows me to connect to the database (step 2).
But then in step 3 under "Use an existing empty database" the drop-down list shows my database but won't allow me to select it.
I have the same issue if trying to upgrade from 6.1 to 6.2
Would appreciate any help.
