Here is what typo3 populated by interacting with the installation tool:

elim at uLnx:/home/www/htdocs/tp/typo3conf$ cat deprecation_171170d3ed.log

11-02-14 15:08: DatabaseConnection->sql_pconnect() and DatabaseConnection->connectDB() should be called without arguments. Use the setters instead.


Don't know whether that caused problem or not..... On the other hand,  in LocalConfiguration.php, the installation tool recorded the db username and password correctly.
