It works with newer versions. I use Fedora 18 to test patches and besides 
some more warnings in BE, I do not have problems.
You can reduce the warnings by setting the error bitmask properly, but the 
default one should do - we ported this simple part of PHP 5.4 support to 4.5 
too.

Should work without problems if you only use vendor packages.

As a script language, PHP is pretty much agnostic to the surrounding CPU 
arch.
