While PHP itself is thread-safe, some of the libraries it uses aren't.
Running PHP in threaded environment bears a risk of then chasing the
errors and quirks that are hard to reproduce, core dumps, etc. And,
it's not so much faster to begin with.

With TYPO3, your performance bottleneck is certainly not worker vs.
prefork in Apache. If you haven't seen it already, there is an article
on performance tuning at wiki.typo3.org.
