[Typo3-linux] Can not log in to backend.

I installed the dummy and source tar packages onto my webserver.  Everything works great.  The install tool worked.  It created the database on my dB server.  The problem now is that I can not log into the backend.
 
 When I try with "admin" and "password", I get the error: Your login attempt did not succeed. Make sure to spell your username and password correctly, including upper/lowercase characters.
 
 So, I set up ethereal to see if anything fishy was going on and to see what the Error Code from MySQL is.  I got this: Response Error Code: 554.  The payload states: Field 'ses_data' doesn't have a default value.  Huh?
 
 So, I went back to the Install Tool and to the Database Analyser.  I selected the option to "create 'admin' user".  I entered the new username and password and selected Write To Database.  Typo says "User Created".  Upon further investigation, that is not true.  There are no new entries in the be_users table.  So, I set up ethereal to capture the traffic between my web and dB servers.  It is getting this error: Response Error Code: 554.  The payload states: Field 'usergroup' doesn't have a default value.
 
 Different field, same error.  So, do you think these errors could be the reason I am not able to either enter a new admin user or log into the backend with the default user account?  Any other ideas?  Anybody know how to fix these errors?
