Thanks for your help. You were correct, Novell WAS helpful. On 12/13 
Novell issued a patch for PHP4 because of a rewrite issue. This patch 
had not made it to my Red Carpet updater yet, but I was able to download 
the patch direction from ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.1.rpm/i586. 
I needed PHP4 and apache2-mod_php4.
