[Typo3-linux] Problem re: "disable_functions: exec "

I am trying to install typo on a hosted server. phpinfo() shows:
"disable_functions: exec, system, shell_exec...", which causes an error
of the type : "Warning: exec() has been disabled for security reasons
in...", and Image Magick doesn't work.
Is there a workaround for this? I understand I can disable exec()-based
functions, but I don't want to give up IM functions. Is there another
image-manipulation application I can use instead of IM that doesn't rely
on exec()?
The server is Apache/2.0.54 Fedora, Typo 3.7, PHP 5.0.4.

Thank you kindly.
