There's already a version 8.1 out, but 8.0 should also be working.
If you want the best support (at least from me) you should try to set up a
Debian Woody system... :-)

(Apache, MySQL, PHP)
2. Install TYPO3-specific software (imagemagick, php-gd, freetype)
3. Install the source package
4. Install the sites you like to use

Source only contains the TYPO3 source but no sites
Dummy etc. only contain the TYPO3 sites but no source
It's easy, isn't it? ;-)
