I also prefer PNG. If you use Debian, there won't be any GIF+LZW support by
default. This is the configuration I am using on our company website and
this has never been a problem to us.
However, there's a little update on the LZW story. The patent of Unisys is
going to run out at least for the US in this month. Just FYI.

Well. You may know that I am currently working on Debian packages for TYPO3.
Yesterday I got a very nice feedback of a user who has been working for two
weeks with Linux itself, one week with Debian and just five more minutes to
install my packages and get TYPO3 up and running (using a site installer
that is shipped with these packages).
