[Typo3-install] Not a valid MySql link

I am new to all this  and when I put the  typo3 dummy and source package 
together and got the install tool to finally show up I got this error 
message:

Warning: mysql_list_tables(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link 
resource in /var/www/html/typo3_src-4.0/t3lib/class.t3lib_db.php on line 967

I will try to use vi to find the line 967, but what is it that it has to 
point to or look like for me to fix this error?
