[Typo3-install] Problem with tt_news displaying a news item with an embedded hyperlink

I have a TYPO3 3.8.0 installation and using tt_news version 2.2.24.

If a news item has a hyperlink in it to an external web, the news item is 
incorrectly displayed as per the following:
     {$styles.content.links.wrap}test link . The link works fine but it has 
the {$styles.content.links.wrap}displayed in front of it.

Does anyone know what is causing this and how it can be fixed?
