I "fixed" the problem by replacing my folger "typo3" with that of a clean install without customizations and clearing the folder "typo3temp".

Apparently the CSS was reset doing this - however, the scrollbar between navigation and content in my backend still looks like that of a normal browser instead of the Typo3-styled one.
