It is part of the kdepim package and (AFAIK) only available for Unix 
systems, mainly used with Linux. I don't know about Mac OSX.

I used Pan before and dropped it only, because creates many small files 
which used to make the sync between my notebook and my workstation very 
slow. Now I only use the notebook, but kept KNode.

Well, that is how it is done for newsgroups (unlike mailing lists, although 
both are usually linked).
