UPDATE

About 6 hours ago the problem was solved. Download latest Master and add 

SET NAMES utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci;

via Install Tool / All Configuration

My problem was gone afterwards. What I still don't understand is why this string is needed at all, if the server is forced to use the right collation.

That was a nasty one. Oh what a day.
