Just for your host: that´s on the bottom end of the scale mysql 5.5 
would be some kind of actual . . .

nevertheless after I had some kind of your issues I upgradede to a 5.5 
from a 5.0.x and because of an accident redowngraded to 5.1.6x and ran 
into several misbehaviour . . . which were corrected afterwards again ;-)

so I´d go in first place with a full upgrade to 5.5 as it is really 
recommended and in 90% of all cases quite compatible consider also the 
collation point from Peter Kühnlein
