Tweak your configuration and share your tweaks...
e.g.
    't3lib_cs_convMethod' => 'mbstring',                                                        
    't3lib_cs_utils' => 'mbstring', 
gives your a huge performance gain. I could reduce my unit test time from 30 
minutes (!!!) to 2 minutes just by setting those two values in the install 
tool.
