If you are really interested in speed, try the Arcavias web shop extension. It's optimized for 100,000 products out of the box and non-cached page requests are around 900-1200 msec when using APC (while more half of that time is used by TYPO3/Extbase/RealURL).

A new release was uploaded today in the TER and there's also a demo for those interested at  demo.arcavias.com/t3/
