Short??? They get/got 18 months support [1].

Every release contains breaking changes. The broken extensions often 
contained outdated code and could be fixed with minor adjustments.

All actively maintained were updated by their authors. You could also 
ask yourself why you would continue to use an extension that is not 
maintained.

Dmitry said that it's compatible with 4.5, it works, but he wouldn't fix 
any 4.5-specific bugs. If a security issue would be found it'll most 
likely affect more versions than only TYPO3 4.5.

Just curious, but did you ask the authors of the extensions that you use 
and were broken with 6.0 to make them compatible? What were their answers?
