you could add the setting

$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['SYS']['systemLog'] = 'error_log';

to your localconf.php and remove the temp_CACHED* files. Reload the page 
and try to log in again, which should fail, but now maybe there is an 
entry in your webservers log file.
