[TYPO3-english] urgent: character set mess

Hi,

TYPO3 4.5.3

I was trying to find a solution for the newscalendar extension showing 
scandinavian letters wrong and after trying number of things that didn't 
help I found this bug:

and followed this
$TYPO3_CONF_VARS['SYS']['setDBinit'] = 'SET NAMES utf8'.chr(10).'SET 
CHARACTER SET utf8';

which was really stupid of me since I didn't have a backup and wasn't 
sure what I was doing.

Well after that my whole site is messed up :(
Of course I deleted the line in localconf.php but it didn't help.

What would be your recommendation for this?

I had all (I think) recommended utf8 setup procedures done before this.
