[TYPO3-english] No more images after website transfer

Hello,

I am just about to transfer a Typo3 4.2.8 site from one server to another.
To do so, I copied the corresponding directory tree and database.

So far so good, but once I wanted to add new images, I discovered that they
were not displayed, not even thumbnails in the backend were displayed. The
reason was the missing ImageMagick package, which I installed. After that I
found in apache's error.log entries like "sh: /convert: file not found" ...
note the slash before "convert".

Obviously the convert program is searched for in the root (!) directory
although it resides in /usr/bin.

I set a link so that /convert is found - thumbnails work now, but images on
the website (not the backend) do still not show up.

Can somebody please point me in the right direction? What did I miss? Why is
Typo3 looking for "convert" in the root directory?
