In the 4.5 core Swift Mailer will be used for sending mails. This is 
also used in FLOW3/TYPO3v5, so it is a step towards future versions of 
TYPO3.

Swift Mailer supports sending mails using SMTP/mail()/sendmail/etc. To 
make use of this an adapter has been made which catches mails sent 
through the 'old' mail commands in TYPO3, parses the mails and sends 
them with Swift Mailer.
Unfortunately this adapter does not support everything which is possible 
in emails.

In RC1 it is possible to switch off this adapter in the Install Tool if 
it gives you too many problems. We have contacted the authors of 
Powermail and Direct Mail and they will take a look at supporting Swift 
Mailer in the near future.
