I don't recall where I recently saw this, but I thought there's now hooks in the core to fire off whenever content is modified. Alternately, look to create a service extension that checks the pid of the content being edited and then updates the page.

Alternately, look into TypoScript to overwrite the default actions of the sysmod marker.
