[TYPO3-english] AJAX in the BE?

Hi,

I am creating an extension and I would like to add a field to the page 
header form, similar to the record lookup fields where you start to type 
and suggestions appear below the input field for the user to click on.

I have started by creating a 'user' field so i have control over the 
field with my own class but cannot seem to find any documentation on 
best practice for the AJAX part. If anyone can point me in the direction 
of some AJAX documentation for cases such as this I would be greatful.
