[TYPO3-english] Newbie in Typo3 trying desperately to install it in Xampp

Yes I did, I just followed the instructions at [1 - a little up].
Then you should open localhost/xampp and set a passwort for the mysql 
root user as said in [1]

I run xampp with Ubuntu 10.04, but it did work in earlier versions too.

For dev, easiest is to use the root user and let the install wizard 
create a database for you.
You can use localhost/phpmyadmin to set up a database with an user and 
use this one too.

If you need more help, or want to have a look at my config files, drop me 
a mail. I don't use vhost trought.
