[TYPO3-english] Typo3 4.4.2 Clean URLs Problem

any time i click any of the menu items, i get no response from the server.

so:
http://www.domain.com/about-typo3/
http://www.domain.com/customizing-typo3/
http://www.domain.com/features/

etc, get a "does not exist" error. http://www.domain.com/typo3/ gets the
backend though, since it's a physical directory
