[TYPO3-english] Last updated in the Edit page properties

Hello group,

I like to know how to use "Last updated" in the "Edit page properties". 
  The information given is too vague and  I prefer not to use another 
extension if possible.  The inline help only says: "...the template must 
be configured to use this value."  To cryptic to say the least.  So 
please give me a clue to help me how to pass this value to a page.
