If you want to build a little community site with "Who's got the 
sweetest puppy"-Toplist take Drupal.
If you need an Enterprise level CMS, welcome to TYPO3.

Beside books, you've already found a very good learning source. The 
Mailinglists are well populated and very helpful for various problems 
with TYPO3 Core and Extensions from beginner to expert level.

An additional Hint: When you're a beginner you should choose a Hoster 
that sets up TYPO3 properly for you.
German hosters doing this well are jweiland.net and mittwald.de
