[TYPO3-english] recommended way to update your Typo3 extensions

Hello list,

What is the most recommended way to update your Typo3 extensions? I know 
the option "Check for extension updates" in the Backend, but does this 
option check all extensions or only stable versions? Note: All 
extensions I use are downloaded from http://typo3.org/extensions/ . Is 
there any risk by updating the extensions through the backend on live 
websites?
