@Robert: Wow, did not think of that, but safe_mode is indeed active on 
that Solaris machine, but not on the Debian servers. So far, we did not 
have problems with safe_mode, since the backend is running with 
safe_mode = off on a different vhost.

That would also explain, why my test-script worked, since i executed it 
on the vhost with safe_mode off!

@Ingmar: We also figured, it had something to do with escapeshellarg, 
but i got confused after it worked with my test-script.

I will try to switch off safe_mode on monday and report back here.
