Not *sub*group. If you make it a subgroup, all permissions from subgoup are relayed to the parent group. So it has to be a different group. This is not a problem because one user can be in many groups. For example:
- All users
- Forum read-only users
- mail subscribers
etc.

Do not forget captcha. Robots are clever these days. Writing an automated request for membership and than making tons of spam is very simple. I sometimes catch such requests. They are not generic, they seem to be written for certain sites/extensions.
