[TYPO3-english] BE permissions - access list

Hi,
after a few years with Typo3 I still don't understand why "Access list"
feature in group/user management is hidden. Having to check it seems to
me like an optional feature, that is not important. BUT without
selecting anything from the access list, editors cannot edit anything as
they get just an _empty form_ when they try to edit page, content etc.
So, with every other page I end up selecting always the same number of
items in the Access list, wondering if this is the way, because it's
really annoying.
My question is - how is it possible to allow editor to CRUD content and
pages, without checking and selecting access list.
If that is not possible, then why the heck is the access list not shown
by default? And is there a less painful way to select basic set of
available fields than clicking them with Ctrl key?
Thanks for answers
