Don't forget, the problem with trends of google are that google
cannot show you a trend in a specific market segment.

For example, that so many people it macDonalds doesn't mean
it's good and tasty food... I know far better places to eat.

The best thing you can do is pick a language and technology you are
confortable with,
or your manager is confortable with.

Dmitri's point about managers is not really true and need to be taken
with
a grain of salt.

I have had several situations myself where I had to pick between Java
and PHP,
for some situations I used PHP and for others I use Java. For my
reporting solutiopns I use Java any time over PHP, same as for ETL
sort of work
PHP cannot handle that sort of work well. When it comes to CMS system
there is far
more choice in the PHP world then in the Java world. However in Java
there are some really
nice solutions like Magnolia and Liferay.

However, in the end it all drills down to what YOU are conformable
with and in what
area of software development you want to enter, embedded, enterprise
reporting, simple PHP CMS systems (nukes etc),
more complex like TYPO3, telecommunications (erlang!)
Some people swear by .NET, for my it gives me a headag already thinking
about MS solutions (bad nightmares with MFC)

I usually pick between Java and PHP.

Java still has a good feature... PHP aswell and most other popular
languages.
