Thats not the matter.
The matter is: 
 - how secure are the data encrypted on your smart card and 
 - will you loose your smartcard ...

I data is passed encrypted to the api I wouldn't say that if its a matter for the reader to be secure or not.

This was just a mind play ... and a question if this [1] is possible.
